I still feel like a child within. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and seeing a real adult. I might have believed the delivery of my 2nd child would have altered it, yet I still seem to be in self-denial of the aging process.

Speaking of aging — or instead fighting it off — my wife and I moved into a brand new house and it features space in its basement for the exercise room my dear wfe has always desired. But I’m seeing dollar signs when I ponder all the tiny and large items necessary, from the essential but oft-forgotten weight-lifting benches and mats for exercise to deciding on the most reliable stationary bicycle. Exercise bikes can be difficult these days. Do you buy a recumbent or an upright bicycle? Should I select a digital or analog?

My wife appears determined to get an elliptical machine as well. Yes you read that correctly. A stationary bicycle and an elliptical machine — not only one or the other. My guess is that it will go with the cream for stretch marks she started using after she bore our youngest child. Oh boy I’m gonna get it for that jest.

I have to be deliberate with our budget because our new house is more of a diamond in the rough. We desired it this way, but we still must carefully budget everything, down to the cabinet knobs (no kidding). My wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet refacing design projected, but must remind her the bathroom sink she desires put in shall set us back a fair amount, too.

Gratefully, she and I both appreciate the rustic, natural look, so we are furnishing our new house with unfinished furnitures. Yes, it still requires some finishing, but we can keep the expenses down and produce better furniture than we could find in any store.

I discovered a good table for coffee with some nice, natural knotting and a console table in matching mahogany. For our patio outside we’re researching an outdoor fireplace and we’ll go with some budget wicker furnitures to start.

Supplying a new home might seem so adult, but I can’t help but feel like I’m merely playing house. The new furniture and exercise equipment only feel as a new era of toys.

Introduction

The definition of the word ‘demolish’ is deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. In the late 1970’s Fred Dibnah became the most famous steeplejack in Britain when his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives was shown on Television. Fred was an authority on repairing tall chimneys, so when it came to taking them down he knew just how to do it. He would cut an alcove at the base of the chimney, and then place wooden props to support the structure. By carefully positioning the props, the chimney would collapse in the right direction when the wood was set alight and burned away. Once he was nearly crushed when he miscalculated demonstrating how dangerous demolition work is.

The actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and was used after that to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure. Although in fact the process of demolition in some form or other has been occurring for thousands of years. Buildings have been destroyed either by natural disturbances of the Earth’s crust or during battles or attacks on communities for as long as there have been structures. The remaining ruins would be removed and rebuilt or used for other buildings nearby and must be the first examples of recycling.

Preserving the past - preparing the future.

To preserve Britain’s history of agriculture the land between built up areas of the villages and towns is protected from growth of urban sprawl. This land is known as Green Belt and is preserved for farming which is vital to the continuing economy of the country. By containing the Green Belt, urban areas are squeezed to provide housing, so developers have to be more creative to find suitable sites.

Britain is a country with a very dense population per square mile. The amount of land available for development is limited compared to other countries. Therefore there is always a high demand for space on which to build. Taking down old and unused buildings and replacing them with new is one way to counteract this shortage.

Land that may be disused industrial and commercial sites, but could be contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution, are called Brownfield sites. Once the land has been cleaned up they are potentially valuable for redevelopment. Both Glasgow and South Wales created gardens out of old industrial sites and put in Shopping centres to attract visitors.

Greyfield sites are distinct from Brownfield sites in that they do not have the environmental concerns of toxic waste. The term greyfield comes from the large areas of asphalt which had once been car parks of commercial urban properties. Their value is in the fact that the infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water, sewage, and gas is already in place. These urban areas are underutilised or abandoned and are valuable because require very little remedial work to be utilised. Cities such as Leeds and Manchester have had a massive programme of converting the old warehouses or factories into apartments, shops and restaurants, retaining the original shell and refurbishing the interior into desirable accommodation.

The Demolition process

A professional demolition contractor always makes an assessment of the following basic items.

• The construction and size of the building.
• What items are valuable for re-use?
• How will the old site be re-used?
• How is the waste to be disposed of?
• Electricity water, sewage and gas mains.

Hydraulic excavators and bulldozers can be used to undermine the walls at the base, so that the structure will topple; at the same time controlling the manner and direction of the fall. Safety issues are paramount, and clean-up strategies are also taken into account when determining how the building will be demolished.

Traditional Demolition

Once all the services were disconnected, the men and machinery would go in and just knock down the walls. The whole structure would collapse and the resulting remains would be piled onto lorries and disposed of in landfill sites. Concrete foundation would be broken up by pneumatic drills and the site would be cleared of rubbish. However today demolition practices are subject to strict planning, safety and monitoring regulations and are highly controlled by the local authority.

Deconstruction and Recycling

The new approach to demolishing buildings is known as deconstruction - a green approach. Landfill sites are in short supply so the aim when demolishing a building is to diminish the amount of waste remaining.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily. The work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand - brick by brick - or beam by beam but by going carefully expensive materials are preserved for re-use. The value of deconstruction is that 90% or more of waste is saved from going into landfill sites and reclaimed materials can be re-used and recycled for future buildings. The farmer opposite my house sold his barns in the farm yard for housing; when the builder demolished the barns he cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the wall around the farmhouse thus retaining the character of the farm.

Modern techniques and machinery allows demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Construction materials are recycled and re-used whenever possible in the new structure making significant savings in project costs as well as being good for the environment.

Concrete can now be rapidly broken up with a new machine called a guillotine. The creation of 6f2 recycled material can be done on site from the bricks of the now demolished building. This creates an ideal sub-base for foundation of a new building and avoids removal of the waste to landfill.

Copper pipes, lead, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles, wiring and doors, and wood panelling are valuable objects that are saved for recycling and re-use. Many specialist firms sell reclaimed old or antique building items in most towns and cities.

Tall Buildings

Tower blocks and chimneys are the type of tall buildings that may need to be demolished. The demolition of tall buildings necessitates expert techniques. The tallest building to be demolished lawfully was in 1967/8 of the Singer Building in New York. The collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 demonstrates the terrible devastation that occurs if the demolition is uncontrolled and haphazard.

In the demolishing of tall buildings and large structures a wrecking ball on a crane can be used, but is rarely practiced because the swinging ball is rather uncontrollable. The proximity of other buildings is a determining factor which prevents the use of explosives to implode a tall structure. So ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where other methods are not appropriate to demolish the top part of a tall building. Once it is down to a manageable height demolition can continue in the usual way. The various methods of demolishing tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. To control the dust produced in demolition, water hoses and spray equipment are sometimes used and then it is called a wet demolition.

Explosions

The use of explosives in demolition is very specialist work and getting it wrong would be devastating. If for instance there is atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site, the shockwave may spread outwards instead of upwards causing the wave of energy and sound to break windows. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to surrounding buildings where flying debris may cause injury to spectators.

For many people when they think about demolition they may have in mind the use of explosives in the dramatic collapse of a tall building. This process is actually called implosion using explosives. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas as it brings down a tall building so that the surrounding environment is damaged as little as possible. The collapse takes only seconds for the building to drop into its own footprint.

Because of the dangers of working with explosives they will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical. Where there is a partial collapse of a building and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off, workers are in great danger because the remaining structure is highly unstable. At the same time the demolition has to continue to secure the safety of the site.

Health and Safety

The work of demolition is a much more technical and complicated process than most people would appreciate. The job is highly dangerous and requires experienced and skilled operators to carry out the work. It is essential that personnel working in the industry are thoroughly trained. Health and safety awareness is crucial in demolition services so it is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulations.

Sequence of Demolition

An incorrect sequence of dismantling will result in premature collapse of a building because the stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts. Think of a house of cards and what happens if one of the supporting cards is removed.

There is a strict sequence of events before any demolition can take place. Councils throughout the country will have their own specific list for planning approval in their area, but a typical order would be as follows:-

• Provision of Information
Information must be provided about the construction of the structure to be demolished. Details of its previous use and the appropriate demolition methods to be used, including disposal of hazardous substances, have to be submitted by the demolition company.

• Survey of Demolition
A thorough survey of the site to identify any structural problems, as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances, will need to be discussed in detail with the authorities. (E.g. A disused garage where petrol has been stored is a potential fire hazard so preventative measures will need to be taken).

• Preferred and Safe Method of Work
A reputable demolition company will be able to select the appropriate method of disposal showing the outline dismantling process. Planning is essential for assiduous monitoring. The authorities will require a detailed statement of the safety procedures to used, and all parties involved need to agree the methods before any demolition can take place.

• Preparation and Planning
Issues such as asbestos abatement, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances, disconnecting utilities, and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be shown in the planning stage. There is a lot of preparation to be done before even starting work on demolishing the building itself.

• Protection of the Public
Safety cannot be compromised so where there are heavily populated areas around the demolition site the protection of the public is paramount. Any health hazards will need to be assessed and temporary services arranged, and people affected will have to be informed.

A Nottingham demolition project, or project in almost any town council district will require a similar process to be adhered to in order to approve permission for demolition.

Conclusion

The aim in demolition is to eliminate an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible and in our modern environment efforts are made to recycle or re-use most of the old material. This is not a new idea although the word itself is relatively modern. On the borders between England and Scotland after the Romans left, a large part of Hadrian’s Wall was hauled away and use was made of the beautifully dressed stone to construct the new buildings in the towns and villages nearby and some are still standing today.

Demolition work by its nature is a very dangerous business and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. Next time you see demolition work occurring on a building give a thought to the people who work in a dangerous situation daily and how much is involved in the meticulous planning, regulations compliance, care and skill that goes on to carrying out the project to clear the way for our future.

Last week I was just settling into my new job with a sporting goods wholesaler. My duties were to be mostly in the shipping and picking department. The boss came to the warehouse and asked if any of us knew anything about the internet and websites. I had done a little so I said so. Turned out that the techy guy that came in once a week had taken very ill (he may never work again). His whole work folder was put on my desk. New images to go on the website were needed. Suppliers images needed to be reworked. All this required knowledge of Photoshop . I didn’t know how to use Photoshop. Fortunately I was able to find a program that taught me how to use Photoshop properly. The videos were so easy to follow, which helped with the steep learning curve I was putting myself thorough.

I got through the first deadline with the new images that were needed. I can’t believe how lucky I was to find a set of instructional videos that was so esy to learn from. After that everything seemed to fall into place. Each aspect of Photoshop can be difficult to grasp and the function of each of the tools is so important to completely understand. By learning a new program I have moved from the shipping floor to the main office and I have a lot of admiration from the other staff. Never be afraid to take on a new task, the challenge will propel you into a new level of self-confidence.

SSL Certs were created to validate the genuineness of a web site because it is so easy to counterfeit a business on the web. In 1995, when they were invented, a standard SSL certs provided adequate protection for consumers. SSL certs secure your website and protect transactional data. Need a secure logon for your site or online store? SSL certs must be signed by a trusted authority or more commonly known as Certificate Authorities (CA). CA’s confirm your identity by adding their signature to your SSL certs.SSL Certificates bind an identity to a pair of electronic keys that are used to encrypt and decipher digital information. A public key encrypts the information, whereas a private key decrypts the information.

Security remains a moving target, however, as researchers have also started to find weaknesses in SHA1. Although there are no attacks as advanced as those against MD5, it is likely that SHA1 will also be increasingly threatened by collision attacks as research in this area continues. Secure Sockets Layer, SSL, is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between our web server and your browser remains private and secure. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology protects your Web site and makes it easy for customers to trust you. SSL creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser to ensure that all data transmitted remains private and secure.

Certificates can be reissued as needed in development situations. Certs may need to be reissued when upgrading or changing server software or operating platform; if migrating your site from one server to another, or if an existing private key has been lost, destroyed or otherwise inadvertently overwritten. After re-validating cert information online, the new cert is issued immediately and is valid from the date of reissue until the original expiration date. Certificates are issued by certificate authorities (CAs), which are either trusted because they are a top-level, or root, authority or because they have been granted the ability to issue certificates by a root CA. All Web browsers maintain a list of trusted root certificate authorities as a way to verify certificates issued by those CAs.

Web servers have been built to support it and web browsers have been built to use it. SSL provides the ability to secure customers transactions transparently without the customer having to do a thing! Web server certificates (also known as secure server certificates or SSL certs) are required to initialize an SSL session.

Today, more and more people are buying small trailers of one sort or another. Considering fuel prices and the common act of downsizing family vehicles, owning a good utility trailer makes sense. The main reasons behind owning a trailer is usually based upon business or a family hobby which requires transporting your large toys. Utility trailers can range from small open bed landscaping style trailers to larger enclosed cargo trailers with locking ramp style doors. There are also snowmobile trailers, motorcycle trailers, camping trailers large and small and of course, and boat trailers to mention some. The first step in shopping for a trailer is to decide which type is best for your personal needs.

If you intend to haul small recreation vehicles or motorcycles, then an open flatbed trailer might serve your needs. Then again, if you need extra space at home for storing your toys, you might consider going with a larger enclosed trailer. These are easily locked and stored next to a house or driveway. You would be surprised at how much space you can find in your garage when you start moving your recreation vehicles and such to a storage trailer.

Through the years, I’ve bought and sold many trailers relating to my business and also my hobbies. As most of us find, locating a good used trailer can be a challenge at times but with the advent of online trailer sales, this problem has been solved. You can almost always find the exact type and size trailer you are looking for if you have a bit of patience. It is also very handy to be able to purchase all your trailer parts and accessories on the web also. You can easily find everything from replacement lighting to axles and brakes for just about any utility trailer without leaving your desk.

If you see a new trailer in your future, you really should click through and read this excellent article that will help you select the best utility trailer for your personal needs.

Chair cushions add needed softness to hard wooden kitchen and dining room chairs, but choosing decorative cushions that don’t overpower the kitchen set isn’t easy. You can pick up a set of chair cushions for $5 at the local dollar store - but will they fit into your room’s decor - or detract from your style? Cheap chair pads are filled with thin, durable fabric and poor quality work.

If you take the trouble to choose well-made, quality chair cushions for your kitchen or dining room set, you’ll be rewarded with a set that lasts longer, is far more comfortable and requires less care in the long run. In the selection of the chair cushion for wooden chair, make these things into account. Pick the right size for the seat - if the cushion is too small, it will be uncomfortable. If it’s too large, it will look bulky - and the edges of the chair seat will add to the wear on the fabric and cut the life of your cushions.

Make sure that any ties are sewn into the seam of the cushion. When people sit and stand, chair ties take a lot of pulling and tugging. They are more likely to remain attached if the ties are sewn into the seam.

To make it easy to keep them clean, buy seat cushions treated with stain guard. Investing in a can of stain resist or stain guard make it easier to keep them looking fresh and new should you find the perfect cushions aren’t stain resistant. Your kids eat here in the kitchen, I am assuming. Choose washable chair cushions - or one with removable, washable covers. Some spills are bound to soak in, even if you use stain guard. The ability to wash your chair cushions in the washer will simplify your life. Be sure to pick cushions in a durable fabric, that is able to stand up to the wear of lots of seating.

Corduroy, denim, chintz, canvas and duck are all good choices for fabric that wears like iron. Ruffles and piping, as well as rolled edges, needs must be securely sewn between the top and bottom of the cushion, directly into the seam. Examine the full length of the seam for any gaps or breaks and pull gently on ruffles or piping to be sure they are fully attached. While tufted cushions are definitely stylish, using them to sit on for too long can become uncomfortable. Make sure, when choosing tufted cushions, make sure the buttons are sewn through all the layers of the chair cushion to avoid losing buttons to wriggling bottoms.

If there’s anything we’ve learned in recent months, it is that we should be energy smart whenever possible. Conserving energy in our homes and driving is very worthwhile. Even though oil prices have come down to half of their peak in mid-2008, we know that they could go up again in a hurry.

I drive a large Yukon XL, which is basically a Suburban. Mileage is not so good, but I’ve cut back to making three trips to the office weekly whenever possible. That has helped my fuel budget. I would get a smaller car, but this baby is pretty useful for carrying loads and large groups of people on a trip.

Several years ago we put in extra insulation in our home, and we use a whole house fan to reduce the amount of air conditioning we use. When we hear so much energy talk on the news, it does have the effect of getting us to at least think about ways to cut back on energy usage.

Talk about a waste of energy—the fuel spent on airplanes, helicopters and trucks in fighting wildfires in California is insane. Also, think about all the gasoline used by folks vacating their threatened homes. I found some discussion about wildfire prevention and other fire safety issues at the Minutemanfire site. It is amazing that homes could be destroyed even with tile roofs and a swath where the vegetation had been removed.

There’s a lot of wasted energy in the work involved in rebuilding homes demolished by wildfires. So there is a relationship between energy conservation and fire prevention, that we often don’t think much about.

Most businesses operate in a highly competitive environment. Therefore, in order to be successful, a business must be able to communicate with their clients about the products or services that they provide. Signage comes in various varieties, and commercial signs are there to identify or attract business for the store, building or vehicle displaying the sign.

Nothing enhances your business image more than high quality signage outside your premises. With everybody trying to compete for customers then it is crucial that you differentiate yourself from everyone else. Shop signage, window graphics, vehicle signs, van wraps or internal signs should be designed and manufactured to fulfil the individual requirements of each business.

Internal signs are often overlooked when people assess their signage requirements. Whilst concentrating on external signs to create the right impression to attract customers, they overlook the advantages that internal signage has to offer. Whether used for promotion, displays, directions or general information then internal signage can assist you and your clients find what they need, when they need it.

Vehicle graphics and wraps are a cost effective form of advertising with a potentially large return. Any company that does not use its vehicles is missing out on a superb way to reach new customers. An advert in any online or telephone directory only reaches the people that are specifically searching for your product, but a company car or van is seen by hundreds and possibly thousands of people every single day. With increasing amounts of vehicles being supplied on lease contracts, imagine how many potential new customers would see your ‘advert’ over the course of a year.

Promotional signage including A-boards, swing signs, window graphics and floor graphics are also a great way to get your business noticed. This type of signage is ideal for use when attempting to attract passing trade from the general public. Many newsagents, estate agents and travel agents use pavement signs to show their latest offers or best deals.
