How can you get your dog to stop chewing things?

I am guessing that as you are reading this then your dog is currently chewing anything it can get its teeth into? Unfortunately some dogs do love to chew, and the problem is often made worse if they get bored, for instance while they are alone in your house during the day, which means you are never quite sure what to expect when you get from work etc…

Usually the favorite item for a dog to chew on is his or her bed, as that is where they will be when they are bored and missing you, so they just start chewing and before long there is stuffing everywhere. You can actually find indestructible dog beds which make it a lot harder for your dog to chew on them, or are a lot tougher so they can withstand chewing, but the problem is they will just move onto something else then.

If you want a permanent solution then you really only have two choices, you can train them out of the habit yourself, or take them for professional training. Training them yourself is the least expensive option, you can get books off Amazon.com or there are other courses available now for you to buy, but often owners are reluctant to tell their dog off which they may be required to do as part of the training. That’s why lessons are your best bet, you still get to train your own dog (the instructor just directs you) but as you have the instructor on hand they can force you to do what is necessary to get your dog to listen to you so you can stop them chewing once and for all.
